MANATEE COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Gold parties are becoming one of the latest trends in a struggling economy.

It's where people get rid of things they already own, like jewelry.

Caryn Hodge recently hosted her third gold party at her Holmes Beach home.

Guests can bring in jewelery they no longer wear or want and get cash on the spot for it.

She says so far she's earned more than $300.

"Everybody can use the extra cash right now," Hodge said. "Whether it's helping pay bills or something special for themselves."

He says gold parties are an easy and safe way to earn some extra cash.

"Gold prices have just went up from five, six years ago," Mikel said.

The jewelry doesn't have to be in perfect shape to sell it. It can be tangled, mismatched, or even smashed. Most of the time guests will get more than they thought you would.

David Zaccagnino earned $50 for an old ring and necklace.

"I thought maybe $5, $10 but $50?," Zaccagnino said. "I was like 'cool.'"
